Description: Hurricane Katrina wiped out 350 homes on this island. Sad, of course, but it’s not like these homeowners needed a one-time helping hand. Dauphin Island has been wiped out five times in the last twenty five years. How ‘bout those odds, Harrah?

The last hurricane moved the island 100 feet inland. There are on-going projects to relocate sand from behind the island to the lost beachfront and build berms to “mitigate” future storm damage. “Mitigate” is political speak for “it’s sure nough gonna happen again, so get your pocketbook handy.” The local government pays 15% of the bill. Guess who pays the rest?

How crazy is it to build on a foundation of shifting sand? Well, it is biblical (Mathew 7:26), “likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand…” It would be really, really foolish except that the federal and state government subsidize it. I’m sure the people in Iowa are happy to help out there foolish fellow countrymen again and again, right? Right?

    Right!

I, for one, am tired of this practice and it should be stopped.

One of the railroad magnates in the late 19th century or early 20th made the outlandish suggestion that none of the barrier islands should be developed due to their fragile nature. Pity he lost that argument.

Hopefully, after the next hurricane wipes out Florida's subsidized Citizen's Property Insurance fund, those of us not living on barrier islands will refuse to allow the homes to be rebuilt. Pipe dream?

After paying for the Feds to rebuild an entire city below sea level, you think a state will be able to show sense? Pipe dream. (or a better term would be 'wet' dream for the rich)
