Description:
Hurricane Ivan in 2004 wrecked the road leading out to the Fort Pickens. The Park Service hopes to reopen it this year after making sure the turtles are safe.
The SeaRey was moving at turtle-like speed across the great military operation areas of the gulf coast. This requires communication with local controllers. I had a transponder code and merrily flew along listening to Pensacola Approach.
I was almost to Destin when I got a call: “N901SQ, contact Eglin approach on 132.1.”
“Roger.” I switched channels. “Eglin approach, N901SQ at 1000’.”
“Who is calling Eglin?”
“N901SQ.”
“N901SQ say position.”
“N901SQ is eastbound abeam the Destin airport.”
“901SQ are you familiar with the special air traffic rule for transiting this area?”
“Roger.”
“The rule requires that you be in contact with me before flying in this heavily trafficked airspace.”
“Roger. That’s why I have a squawk code and have been in constant contact with ATC since Mobile Bay.”
“You are required to be in contact with Eglin approach to enter R2915C. You just passed through without the required approval.”
“Roger. Are you receiving my squawk code? It was assigned by Pensacola who just told me to switch to your frequency.”
“Next time contact Eglin before entering restricted airspace.”
Who has time for such mundane arguments on what was supposed to be a busy frequency? I just “Rogered” and shut up.
The whole conversation made me a bit mad. I figured I’d have to fill out a report form over dinner. That colored the rest of the flight to a sundown landing at Apalachicola.
The days log reads as follows: Vicksburg (TVR) to the river and St. Johns Parish, LA (1L0), 2.7 hours 1L0 to the mouth of the Mississippi then to Ocean Springs, MS (5R2), 2.4 hours 5R2 to Apalachicola, FL (AAF), 3.0
For a mostly fun, but slightly irritating, 8.1 hours in the air.

That area is among the most beatiful and most restricted of any airspace I've seen. May even be worse than the WDC ADIZ.

Just to be clear, the primary source of my irritation was my lack of attention. Pensacola was only providing flight following. It was my responsibility to maintain situational awareness and switch to Eglin. It would have been nice to have some help from Pensacola, but, it wasn't their primary responsibility.
