Description: Vicksburg was the site of a major battle in the War Between the States. There is now a huge National Military Park commemorating the event. The hotel receptionist was insistent that I should see the Union ironclad (USS Cairo) recently recovered from a nearby bayou and restored.

I told her I would look for it. I found it not far from downtown, but it was covered by a tent. The bluffs looked too formidable for a casual climb, so I passed it up until next time.

Vicksburg is renowned as the birth place of Coca-Cola. I didn’t bother to look for that one at all.

    Just a minor correction, Dan.

Vicksburg is where Coke was first bottled in 1894, after it's 1886 introduction in Atlanta by John Pemberton.

The Vicksburg Tourist Bureau must have a different definition of 'Birthplace,' Jim. It is probably because of an inferiority complex with their bigger Southern sister city.

This seems to be a matter of some sensitivity, Jim. One Vicksburgian had this to say: “We long ago determined that it is the place of delivery that is important, not the place of conception.”

either it was Sunday and everybody was in church or the war took a heavy toll. I cannot see any people down there

There are a few blokes down there on the RR tracks, mate. Heading out-of-town after a tough night at the casino boat and a few too many Southern Comforts & Coke, I'd reckon.
