Description: The seaplane rally at St. Augustine was totally dominated by the ‘Reys. With Rick and Randy already on stage, a total of seven SeaReys took the ramp. In fact, the SeaReys were the ONLY ones landing in the water and strutting up the ramp.

Well actually, six of the seven strutted up the ramp. One of them (mine) struggled up the ramp because of a uncooperative landing gear. Because of the struggle, I followed the good advice of the other Seareyers and departed on the concrete runway and didn't hit a single oyster! However, my landing at Haller Field was anything but boring. I touched down normally... but the slower I got... the lower I got... till my butt was dragging on the ground. Once there, it made my landing rollout almost nothing. My left main gear had gradually collapsed! Some fellow pilots ran out to assist and humiliate me. But they chipped in to lift the plane high enough to allow the gear to drop down and lock. Then I retaliated by challenging them to land their plane with a collapsed gear and still be able to taxi back to their hangar!... which I demonstrated with my head held high.

Washed the plane down and put her to bed. The only damage to the plane was the linkage between the overcenter locks and the torque bar. I ordered the Lima gear today! :-)

    What gear do you have?

I have an electric powered manual gear. Instead of using the manually powered gear lever, I have an electric actuator that connects to the torque bar. It has worked fine for 8 months. But I knew there was coming a day that I would join the club....

    Randy,

Sorry to hear of your gear collapse. Welcome to the club. My new SR had its gear cycled one time in the
air, and--the left gear promptly collapsed upon landing. Accordingly, I am not cycling my gear. This
prevents it's use as an amphibian.

Frank, you've definitely got to get your gear operational. That's what makes a seaplane a seaplane and opens the door to go anywhere!

There almost was another SeaRey at SGJ. I flew up from Spruce Creek and tried raising the tower for clearance to land. I could hear radio traffic but apparantly no one could hear me. I circled the class D space and went home. I found the BNC cable connector came off the antenna connector. I don't know how I was able to hear anything.

Sorry we missed you Joe. Hamburgers and hotdogs were excellent!

What a great looking bunch of airplanes! On a different subject, have any of you tried to use the wing floats for extended range fuel tanks?

Rick Oreair - Feb 13,2008 Viewers | Reply
    Don,

I don't think that my rear end could handle it. I have Rob's Aussie 24Gallon tank, and although I flight plan 5 GPH, the reality is closer to 4 GPH. That is a long time in my 3 hour seats.

I seem to remember an old picture of a plane with 2 additional floats mounted on the wing struts and used as external fuel tanks. Forgot where, but it must have been on the technical site.

I had a thread on that subject on the technical site a couple of years ago. Not practical for several reasons. Mostly structural.
