We had the plane all loaded up in advance so all we would have to do on Friday is add some fuel and go.
Friday morning brought low ceilings and by noon the winds were running the wrong way - downhill - at Northbrook.

This is the picture Cheryl took to show how much the wind was blowing.

I'm not making fun of her, you can really see the leaves in that one tree blown sideways...

OK....

I AM making fun of her. Attachments:

We left the gas out and unloaded the plane. Cheryl drove on down to Shelby and I took off, in a much lighter plane, uphill from Northbrook.

The wind was wacky at Shelby too, but there I have 5,000 feet of asphalt with a wide open apprach to work with.

At Shelby we loaded up the camping gear, filled up the tank, and Cheryl hopped in and we were on our way!

With 30mph tailwinds, we didn't need to stop at Marlboro county jetport, but I needed to get an update on the winds to decide whether to go on to the coast as planned or to skip it and go straight to Lumberton.

Here is a picture of my face as I listen to the AWOS at Marlboro saying winds were 15Knots gusting to 28Knots.
Attachments:

This is the look on Cheryl's face when the AWOS said 15Knots gusting to 28Knots.

She is completly oblivious with a blind and total trust in me.

What a dummy! Attachments:

Well, the forcast didn't lean towards a pleasant flight up the coast, so we fueled up and headed to Lumberton.

After a short flight, I contacted the advisory frequency got into the pattern for the ultralight field. On my base leg, I looked over to the main runway and saw something that just didnt seem right. It was a plane on final - that much I knew, but it was weird. I didn't have time to scrutinize since I was dealing with some silly winds and going into a 1200 foot field. On my landing rollout I looked over to the main runway and saw it again, only this time it was hovering. It was this:

Attachments:

We went to the ultralight / sport plane area since that is were we have always gone before and have had great experiances.

In a short time we had made some new friends and gotten a ride to the store to pick up ice and beer.

Here we are on a pit stop at Mike and Steve's hotel to get some of their important supplies.
Attachments:

Of course any good fly-in has time to sit down and meet new people (and get reaquianted with some old friends) and do some hangar flying.

This picture just cracks me up: Attachments:

I included this picture that Cheryl took because I think I look really cool in it. I look taller, stronger, and smarter than in real life.

Attachments:

Hey, 2 out of 3 isn't all that bad! I'd someday like to do something like this, only I don't do the tent thing, maybe they could like arrange to have a motor home there, like Charlie Picket has.

Tony Gugliuzza - May 20,2008 Viewers | Reply
    Well, jeez, Dave.....
If you NEED to be a wuss about it, there's a hotel less than a half mile away.

At the end of the night, since you are partying AT the airport, its just easier to stumble into your tent than all the way over to a hotel.

Now, on the other hand...
If you can arrange to have someone drive a big motor home for you, then save me a bed!
Saturday afternoon we considered moving to the GA side of the airport.

Cheryl didn't want to have to break down the tent and repack everything, so I arranged for a truck:

Attachments:

'Here is a picture of the ONLY Searey at the GA field:'

I noticed this is the second time you made this point. Now you know how I've felt the last several years at the Greenville Maine seaplane fly-in.

Tony Gugliuzza - May 21,2008 Viewers | Reply
    Hmmm,

Now that I read it I think it came out wrong. I was not trying to suggest that I was sore at other Seareyers for not going. Heck, I was the only amphib of any kind there (all those strangers don't know that I havent splashed it yet - so its an amphib to them).
I'n some ways, its kind of neat to have a completely unique plane at a fly-in like that.
But it would have also been cool to have a few of 'em lined up together.

Sunday morning brought strong headwinds back, and it was slow going on the way home with headwinds running 30-35mph.

First is a pic of Marboro County Airport on final approach:

------

Second is a pic of Marboro County Airport five minutes later - still on final approach:

-------

The air was smooth for the first half of the trip home, but later it got as crazy as it was on the trip there only worse.

Landing at Rock Hill had only 12Knot winds with gusts to 18knots reported, but when I got over the runway I was already dealing with a quartering headwind, and the gusts, higher than 6 knots, were coming from about an 80 degree different direction. It was pretty challenging, but after a few thousand feet of tarmack rolling below me, waiting for just the right time, it all came together for a smooth landing.

The Searey seems to handle the wind well. While at Rock Hill, I was talking with a CFI who was about to take his student for some instrument practice. I let him know it was a bit rough out there, but I think he didn't really consider what 'rough' was, since I was flying a 'little' plane. At least he didnt consider it right then...

After fueling up I was in line behind him in his Archer. When he took off his wings bobbled around a bit and a somewhat shaky voice came over the radio advising me not to take off in 'that little plane'.
I'm sure he meant well, but I was a little worried about the 'jinx' effect.
We departed without incident and headed to our home field. Getting thrown around over the trees on final approach was like reuniting with an old friend - it was good to be home.

Of course there was a great airshow, and some warbirds and other planes to look at. I know I am omitting the expected pictures of these things, but the people and the adventure is what made this trip so fun.

Hope to see some of you Seareyers on the next one! Attachments:

Thanks for the report, Tony! It looks like you had a good time.

You might see a few more SeaReys at the Virginia Regional Festival of Flight: http://virginiaflyin.org/
Don,
Despite the fact that I posted this event on my website, I hadn't really considered going.
But I just talked it over with Cheryl and she's game, so if the weather looks good, we'll check it out!

I will be going also. Maybe Don and I can fly down in formation? I know I am setting myself up for those Maxwell jokes about throttling back because my AV II is so slow.

Rick Oreair - May 22,2008 Viewers | Reply
Not to worry Matt, we seareyers have to pick on the bottom of the food chain, because we are next to the bottom of the food chain! Searey's ain't fast, but they sure are fun!!!As I'm sure the AVII is. Have fun

We all may be at the bottom of the speed food chain but we are on the top of the fun food chain.

It's only 70 miles, Matt. Leave on Friday, and I'll catch up with you on Saturday.

Thanks for sharing the trip and the experiences. It's what makes flying so enjoyable.
