Description: The Arkansas River valley is actually the northern end of the great Rio Grande Rift. This long, slender down-faulted valley subsided as the mountains around it rose up.

The headwaters of the Arkansas River begin at Tennessee Pass just north of Leadville. Water runs downhill from here to the Mississippi and then on to New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico. It was definitely headed my way.
