30 Going South

Description: Because of the big sky blockade at Denver, Peli turned south on U.S. 24. The road squeezes between the Sawatch Range to the west and the Mosquito Range to the east.

Early in World War II a need for training troops to fight in mountains was recognized. Out near the Tennessee Pass and the little town of Pando was a train station right in the middle of the Rockies. With over 160” of snow every year, it was a great place for Camp Hale and the fabled 10th Mountain Division to get started.

There was one negative noted in the federal survey: Leadville. The report stated, 'The morals of Leadville are said to be on a rather low plane.'

“A low plane? Perfect for a SeaRey!”

Actually, the Army made the local folks clean the place up before they would allow the troops into town. Gambling and liquor laws had to be enforced and the local prostitutes had to go into hiding.

Another problem was that Pando was essentially an alpine swamp. It first had to be drained and the Eagle River re-routed. That was probably easier than cleaning up the town.
