Description:
Not far from the airport at Leadville I spotted a large body of water: Turquoise Lake.
“Oh yeah! Now that’s what I’m talking about! I’m gonna cool the hull.”
“What! You gotta be kidding me. That water has got to be 10,000’ high.”
“Or higher! Cool!”
“Wait! Let’s check the density altitude at the Leadville airport.”
“Go ahead. Knock yourself out. I’m headed for the lake.”
“Did you hear that? Density altitude at the airport is 12,500’.”
“Totally outrageous!”
“I’m glad you agree. It would be crazy to even think about splashing there.”
“No need to think about it. I’m gonna do it.”
“The highest you’ve ever splashed was 7500’ and you barely got 220WT back off the water from that.”
“Yeah, but Peli is one hot turbo-SUPER-charged stud of a plane and is just the one to do it.”
“Look! Right here in the Seaplane Pilots Association guide it says the lake is closed to seaplanes. So there!”
Grumbling, “Well, then, why do they allow power boats on it? Look over there at that big boat scooting right across it.”
“There is no justice. Oh, well, let’s just go to the airport.”
“There isn’t any harm in just taking a little look. There is no rule in that stupid book against flying 10’ over the water, is there?”
“I’ll bet there is.”
“Since you can’t find it, we’ll just drop down to a low level and see if anyone objects.”
“Hey! You’re getting really, really close to the water!”
“It is indeed a fine line between being legal and being right.”
“A matter of a few air molecules, actually….”
SPLASH!
“Ops. There was a sudden downdraft. Sorry. My bad.”
“You know even if you get away with violating the law, you’re still a criminal.”
“An outlaw, actually. Give me a six shooter and we’ll take that beach, by gum!”
