Yup, this is the real deal. You won't find a nicer seaplane in the LSA category period!

Maybe. But I'm not at all happy with P&P. The article and the video are pure fluff, and it's clear that both the writer and the editor (who took the photos) were bamboozled by the Icon gang and their hype.

Oh, it is a great design and If I had the money, I would buy one. Fluff or not.

Hey Don, what's your beef with P&P? If nothing else, I love reading Bill Cox--and Dave Gwinn was a favorite <br />also. P&P is a little on the basic side--not to appear too pompous, but they have some good stuff, occasionally.

Frank, I liked P&P better when Lyn Freeman was editor. The next guy just about lost my subscription, but the current editor, Jessica Ambats, has been doing pretty well--until the Icon boys apparently wooed her with a ride on a hopped up jetski. The resulting article is shameless promotion of the Icon A5, with no data, no hard looks at it, no nuthin' that counts as journalism. The airplane may be the best thing since ice cream--or the worst--but you'd never know from that fluff.<P>Well, okay, I've revised my opinion somewhat. Maybe they intended to write about the Icon <I>guys,</I> instead of the airplane. That would have been a better piece. But they did something in between that looks like a Coke commercial to me. Or Viagra.<!-- >'"><br><font color=red size=6>' or > missing in user HTML. Please fix the HTML.</font> -->

A 'Jet Ski' with wings, heh? If they get that prolific, they'll actually make tons <br />of money in aviation.<br /><br />I've not read the article in P&P re Icon, but the video certainly was closer to an <br />ad than reporting.

Frank, the complete article begins on the same web page as the video--the link above. To see the rest of the pages you have to click on the page links at the end of the text (about half way down the first page).

I think that it will appeal to a lot more people than our SR because it is a lot more polished, but the SR with the sliding canopy, and good handling manners is almost perfect for most of us.

And certainly the price of the SR will be very appealing. You can almost get two Seareys for the price of one Ikon, however it will be nice to have more choices, and the <br />Ikon is certainly a sharp looking design...

Are they delivering these already? Or are they still selling the concept?

I believe they are a long way from delivery, they are still flight testing.

As they say in the software industry - Vaporware. I do hope they succeed, but doubt very much that they will sell enough to make an impact in the LSA industry. It is a pretty plane. Put a sliding canopy on it and make me rich enough to afford it...

In the article, they say they will deliver their first production model in the third quarter of 2011.

Not to get technical here--but I'm really interested in how they cool the engine on the Icon A5. Aside from the openings you can see in this photo, there appears to be only one small opening ahead of the engine, and its area is MUCH less than Rotax requires. They must be admitting air somewhere, though. Clever guys.

Don, There are also 2 small underwing scoops. Maybe it's not designed to taxi for 4 miles at Dulles on a hot day.

Ah! That's how Lockwood cools the Aircam engines. I was going to copy his idea when thinking about making a complete cowling for my SeaRey, but in the end was too lazy and just gave it a hat.

There is an obvious large vent on the full vertical length of the pylon. I'm told that the intake openings for cooling air are nothing like as important as the exit size. It may be that with huge exit vents, smaller intake vents may be adequate.
