Description: I am a big fan of natural history. The more recent history of man is just too difficult to understand. Having a virtually time-proof mountain carved up to commemorate highly ephemeral people makes no sense to me.

Heroes of the evanescent Confederacy (President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee, and “Stonewall” Jackson) have been carved into Stone Mountain. They make up the largest bas relief carving in the world. The carving covers 3 acres. It was started in 1916 but not completed until 1972. In another case of rock graffiti, the original carver gave up after seven years on Stone Mountain, but went on to make his mark on Mt. Rushmore.
