Description:
The dawn of a beautiful day…perfect for leaving the country. I’d gotten an early start. The U.S. Border & Customs guys had approved my plan for leaving (they were probably all in favor of it). The Canadians had agreed to let me in, but only on condition that they have an opportunity to see what they’d gotten into upon my arrival. I’d even filed an international flight plan. Now there was a serious schedule to attend to so that I’d make my expected time of border expatriation for N1168D.
She decided not to go. It didn’t take long to find she had shed her air cleaner. How hard could it be to find a replacement air cleaner? Impossible, at least in Toledo.
That was a big worry. Storms were approaching from the west. If the departure was to be delayed for a day, it could easily turn into two or more due to weather. No worries, because after discussing the issue with those in the know, it seemed a reasonable risk to fly on with an improvised cloth cover. Even the new owner agreed it was an acceptable risk to his airplane.
I must have gotten the wrong cloth (or put too much oil on it?). On takeoff the airplane made just enough power to barely stagger off the runway. It was back to ground zero.
Upon further consultation, approval of the new owner, and a little bit of SeRaT, I decide to risk flight without a filter. Fortunately no volcanic dust was in the forecast.
Unfortunately my estimated TOD was totally busted. All the requests for departure had to be redone and refilled and bureaucracy served. By the time all that was done, it well into the afternoon.
