Description:
An obscure notation on my chart warned pilots to avoid this area for reasons of national security. It must be an artifact from WWII.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (both the laboratory and the town) were built in less than a year in 1943 to support the Manhattan Project. Processes for separating uranium and plutonium needed for building the bomb were developed at the facility.
After WWII the laboratory quit working on bombs and started working on energy and nuclear research. It is now the Department of Energy’s largest science and technology laboratory. I suppose tangentially that could relate to national security, but it really seems to be a waste of print to notice it on current aeronautical charts and force seriously late pilots to commit SeDT.

There was a time when Oak Ridge, TN, was reported to have the highest average I.Q. in the United States.

Maybe so, but have you ever dealt with DOE folk from Washington?
