Description:
The Great Smoky Mountains are not nearly as intimidating to a light plane pilot as some western mountains. They do, however, create a bit of weather as moisture laden air from the gulf smacks up against them. This gives rise to the “smoke” of their namesake.
The fuel gage suggested that a stop at Pickens County (Jasper, Georgia) would be timely. It took the entire length of the long runway to bounce to a stop. Did I mention the effect of wind in the mountains?
As I humbly taxied towards the self-fuel station, two timeless looking Mountain Men stood on a log porch and stared. I studiedly ignored them and eventually they went away (shaking their heads).
The clock showed 1.9 hours since departing Thomaston, covering 111 miles, at an average rate of 61.4 mph. Great progress for glaciers, not so much for airplanes, even SeaReys.
