Description: 16 million bricks is just a number until you stand inside the fort and are awed by the scope of its construction and the audacity of its builders, to construct something like this so far from the rest of civilization as it was in the 1800's. As there was no source of fresh water, the fort was constructed to collect rainwater from the parapets and divert it into cisterns built into the foundations. Each level of the fort and each opening was designed to hold a cannon. Plans called for several hundred to be installed, but the shifting ground of the island caused subsidence and the invention of the rifled cannon, which could penetrate the walls of the fort, meant that it would ultimately be abandoned before completion.
