Description:
Getting to the Fort from Key West is an easy 50 minute flight, and the first portion is over the Marquesas islands, so its not totally open water. However, there are a few things to keep in mind: The Dry Tortugas lie outside of the ADIZ, so a flight plan must be filed. It is required to file a return flight plan (Key West to Key West via Dry Tortugas), with enough time to allow for spending several hours at the fort, as there is no communication with FSS at the fort. Also, this is a National Park, so a permit is required. The permit costs $100 per plane and is available from the parks service website at http://www.nps.gov/drto/parkmgmt/permits-required-for-specia l-access-to-dry-tortugas-national-park.htm. You need to get the permit in advance of your trip. There is a no-fly zone extending south of the fort, to protect bird nesting sites on the adjacent keys. The permit contains more details about this. We contacted Key West Seaplane Adventures and spoke to their pilot, Evan, who was very helpful with tips on the best areas to land. He even gave us a wind and wave report on the morning of our departure. There is also an NOAA buoy at Dry Tortugas reporting conditions at http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=dryf1

Dave, I really appreciate all of the info you shared about Fort Jefferson and the Dry Tortugas. Visiting there is near the top of my 'bucket list.'
