Another Christmas present? “We’re going golfing on the new course. Why don’t you join us? Or just go fly and we’ll see you tomorrow?”

Why indeed! My friend the helicopter pilot decided he would go play the owner’s new private golf course. That was the politically correct thing to do. He has a future in SuRi corporate aviation. I decided I’d go fly.
Attachments:

With a free pass, there was time to explore. I diverted to the west coast to check out the Tasman Sea. The way west may look open, but it is blocked by a big red block of restricted military air space. Attachments:

The west coast was much more subdued than the dramatic rockscapes of the eastern side. Attachments:

One of the most noticeable differences between the two coasts is an absence of people. The Christmas holidays had the east coast beaches packed towel-to-towel. No one was vacationing on the west coast. Except me. Attachments:

The drama on the west coast was provided by the activities of people who were nowhere in sight. Arches to nowhere? Maybe. It depends. It’s art. Big art. Attachments:

It’s a bit scary thinking those big sticks could come down in a pile of pick-up-sticks at any old some time. Attachments:

After leaving the ground based art show, I moved on to an aerial one. What a way to rinse the salt off! Attachments:

Fifty years of aviation made for a welcoming tradition. The North Shore airport was a great base of operations away from the yacht. The nice lady at the front desk quit asking me for parking or landing fees. I don’t know why. Maybe it was just the Christmas spirit. Attachments:

If all goes well, Barry, I'll be back in October bringing a new SeaRey to be based at a private airport near Mangawhai.
