Description: Sometimes it’s hard to find a flat parking place. Sometimes it’s good to find any parking place. The bay on the biggest weekend of the summer was thick with boats, big and small. They were making me fondly recall mere ocean swells under lowering clouds of the morning.

“Never cancel on a forecast.” That adage was probably from an era when forecasts weren’t so good. Even with a bad forecast, it’s not always foolish to take a look. Sometimes, however, when a bad forecast makes you wish you had canceled, you get a close look at the high ridges under low clouds. Instead of starting out the day at the beach, I started out smelling the ferns. Attachments:

Bypassing the ridges and cruising the coast can make you glad you didn’t cancel. Attachments:

Following the coast is not straight line flying. Attachments:

Possible SeaRey ramp? Maybe if the clouds came down to kiss the tops of the waves. Attachments:

The coast might be clear, but the clouds were getting pretty close. Attachments:

Sharp rocks on top of the ridge appeared to be slicing the skin of air, leaving it to bleed clouds as the wind assaulted the land. Attachments:

A nice sandy beach around a big bay is welcome relief from clouds and rocks. Attachments:

Brown water is rare on the eastern coast up north. Here it spilled out in abundance at a river mouth. Attachments:

Unlit aeronautical obstacles? There were hard hazards to low level flight along the coast. Attachments:

I would fear an engine out landing in that sea Dan, the Minnow would never make it to Gilligan's island.

The Minnow is expendable, Russ, but I'd really hate to climb out of the water onto those rocks while being chased by a Great White!

Didn't see that until now, Wayne. Maybe that comes from looking at the hole instead of the whole!

Signaling the entrance to the Bay of Islands, a lighthouse on Cape Brett needed no illumination during the day. Attachments:

Ah, Resting in Peace! A beach break is a thing of beauty for a wave weary SeaRey pilot.

It could have been a final resting place for the day. Most of the rooms in town were sold to Aucklanders on Holiday. I got the last room at the Orchid Grove Country Lodge through a hotel app. It was way out of the way, but a friendly SaltAir pilot (Bay of Islands Sightseeing) drove me there. I arrived at the front desk to a panicked clerk. It was the dreaded double booking and I had arrived second! Fortunately there was one room left at another hotel on the coast. It cost three times what it was worth, but it beat sleeping with the flowers. Attachments:
