Description: The scenery was nice enough to slow the airplane, but that wasn’t the reason I was late. It was my shopping detour.

The chief stewardess regularly placed orders to be flown out to the boat. Every morning I’d get strange requests:
“Bring me two cases of Pure Blonde.”
“Two bunches of rocket.”
“Six dozen free range Grade A eggs.”
“Organic goat milk yogurt.”
“Sixteen Chocolate Paddle Pops.”
The messages were texted to my local phone. Since I usually had no idea what she was after, I’d show it to a store clerk and they would promptly locate whatever strange item that was missing from the boat’s pantry.

Then on the morning came this text: “Bring 10 bottles of fish washing liquid.”

Now, I’ve lived around fishing all my life. This was the first I had ever heard of fish washing liquid.

I mentioned my confusion to the taxi driver thinking it might be some Kiwi thing. “Can’t help you there, mate. Never heard of such a thing. What’s wrong with sea water? Our water not clean enough for your guests?” He agreed to wait while I went into the little grocery store on a scavenger hunt.

The cashier was similarly perplexed. She put in a call to the manager. The manager called the meat department manager. Everyone just stood there shrugging.

So, I figured maybe I needed to go to a bait shop for it. I sent a text asking where I could find such detergent. “Any store” was the reply.

Right.

A young Maori girl sweeping the floor had been watching this developing fiasco. She finally spoke up. Quietly she said, “You’ll be wanting dishwashing detergent.”

“Dishwashing detergent? Surely not. They have got to have plenty of that on the boat.”

“The ‘f’ is right next to the ‘d’ on a phone pad.”

It took 60 seconds of stunned silence before I could reply. “Oh….right. Ten bottles of that then.” Just to make it slightly more embarrassing I added, “And make sure it is organic free range detergent.”
Out on the peaceful pastures they are probably perfecting Steep Range Black Cow Fertilizing packets for my next shopping adventure. Attachments:

Two old cones have been converted to the perfect place for obtaining Volcanic Sheep Milk Yogurt. Now, if only they would pave a strip down the side for SeaRey access. Maybe next year. Attachments:

There was no late arrival the next day. There was no shopping list. There was no activity at all.

Living on the other side of the International Date Line is sometimes confusing. I thought this might be one of those times. It was only the Eve, but it seemed like New Years Day. Apparently everyone partied one night early and it was tough finding anyone interested in flying or boating or any kind of activity. Maybe everyone was resting up for the big midnight celebration?

Not me. I do my best celebrating in a SeaRey on calm water under blue skies.

But with everyone resting I decided I could do my own SeaRey fueling. After all, the big fuel containers were right out on deck. After a bit of a scavenger hunt I found a siphon and the empty SeaRey fuel jugs.

The color of the fuel seemed a bit odd. No worries, though. Everything is a bit odd on this side of the planet.

What was definitely worrying though were large flakes of stuff floating in the fuel. After more scavenging I found my fuel filter funnel and went back to work.

What was that strange smell, though, coming from the fuel? Diesel? No. Surely not. Must be fumes from SuRi’s engines.

About that time one of the long time deckhands came stumbling out of the dark recesses of SuRi. He looked a bit bewildered. Well, that’s how it is after a big party, eh?

“Mate, what are you doing?” he asked.

Feeling very smug, I replied, “Getting some fuel ready for when everyone gets up.”

“You’re getting fuel for the helicopter fuel, then?”

“What? No. For the SeaRey.”

“Unless you’ve bolted on a jet turbine, mate, you won’t be happy with that. That’s helicopter fuel.”

It’s a quick step from smug to mortified. And grateful for timely guidance from experienced crew.

Attachments:

In an attempt to inspire some activity, the Captain decided to relocate the SuRi. While waiting on the SuRi, the SeaRey got a beach break. Attachments:

Finally the SuRi arrives on station. There were still no takers for SeaRey sightseeing. Attachments:

Dan, what is on the trailing edge of the wing between flap and aileron? Sticking up.

Would you believe a miniature airbrake to keep it from flying so fast? No. Well, that could be a bracket for the folding wing, Ken.

With no one wanting to fly and a forecast calling for wind and storms in the New Year, I retreated back towards the safe harbor of North Shore airport, departing over low black lava rocks. Attachments:

Even the earth below showed evidence of the gathering storm winds, mounding to waves from the approaching storms. But, that was a worry for the next year. Attachments:
