I had a Sea Rey with a blue hull and wing tips land in the lake behind my house in Umatilla, Florida on Sunday late afternoon and I thought they were coming to visit. But they just turned around and took off again.
I would like some one to try my cement boat ramp and taxi to my garage to see if I am going to have any problems when I build mine. My garage has a 33 foot hanger door on the back side just for a Sea Rey.
If your in Umatilla, look for the lake with an Island in the middle. I'm on the East shore, I have a wind sock on the north property line and an American Flag pole on the south property line with the ramp next to the flag pole.
When I get mine built I would like to host a Yearly Gaggle like the Garner's. I have 5 acres of clear field to park planes.
How do you make a lake a private seaplane base?

Thomas - if you have a 33 foot hanger door, I hope you plan to pad the sides when you bring your rey through or you'll be buying expensive position lights frequently. Or mark the centerline for the tailwheel and lines for the mains on the ground. That will give you about 6' on each side!

Six inches is plenty! But if he slips it in sideways, he'll have about three feet on each side.

Umatilla Seaplane Base....that sounds like a great idea ! I say the more the better. By the way how is the deer hunting up in that part of Florida ? You might get a vistor this fall....

Never hunted but I am a mile from the Ocala National Forest.
I traded all my rifles my dad gave me for hand guns.

Re: The Seaplane Base. The FL DOT got out of the business of licensing home seaplane bases several years ago. So you can just go do it!! You can't do anything commercial there but many of us keep our planes on our own beaches without a problem. Some more local fiefdoms have attempted to regulate or outright prohibit the overnight parking of seaplanes on your land with mixed results. But here in Polk County we're doing just fine. If you want it on Sectional Charts that's a whole 'nother issue.

Thomas - I asked the same question a while back and the general consensus was that keeping a good relationship with your neighbors and a low profile is smarter and easier than getting a formal seaplane base put on a sectional. The guy in South Tampa who did it a couple of years ago had a bad experience with it and wouldn't try it again. I chose to give my neighbors rides rather than send out the paperwork to everyone within x number of feet of my house and give them the chance to object to the FAA. Cause, if the FAA says 'No', you may have opened a can of worms you can't close.

Ok, I'll just put Bowden's Landing on the windsock.

I think it must have been Rob Loneragan

It's all about the perception no doubt about that...! Rides and relationships create understanding where only questions existed before.

But when it comes to the FAA, we had NO problems...FA78 was a simple paperwork issue and included a checkbox for charting on sectionals. It's more of a local issue for each state or county, but when it comes to the feds' just send them the paperwork.
