August 06 Tuesday evening Kevin and Beth D’Angelo in N89KD and Chuck Cavanaugh with Heather in N1080 demonstrated excellent night landings in their fancy LSX machines. Larry Woods in Viking GUHL also arrived late Tuesday and Terry Klawitter in YLI Wednesday morning. So with Steve and Fred heading home Wednesday, we still had a fleet of seven launch on the traditional round Georgian Bay marathon via Killarney.

Kevin and Beth in the Shark (or is it "Jaws", attack the Killarney ramp!

6K-Shark

And here comes Larry with friend in his immaculate A-24 Viking GUHL.

6K-ramp2

Lee and Diane in JIB lead Dennis and Terry up the ramp.

6K-ramp

Terry Klawitter in YLI negotiates the ramp easily (then the fun began as she refused to turn.)

6K-Ramp3

Dennis and daughter Alicia in BSE get reacquainted with this great seaplane ramp. Thank you Dennis for letting Brittany enjoy your steed for the first two Gaggle days..

6K-Ramp5

And finally, Chuck and Heather in the second 914 LSX N1080 are welcomed to Killarney.

6K-Ramp4

Parking on the grass in front of Killarney Mountain Lodge is a spectacle for Lodge guests and sightseers. This day marked the fourth sunny day with light winds.

6K-Kill2

The view from the Lodge shows the marina with George Island in the background. The lodge also manages the Killarney Airport.

6K-Kill1

The windsock on the marina marks this as a seaplane base but only 87 octane is available unless one makes the short run to the airport.

6K-Kill3

Greeting the locals with a toothy smile

6K-Kill4

Flying the west side of Georgian Bay across to Cape Croker and then via Lions Head to Flower Pot Island and then over Manitoulin Island to Killarney took us more than two hours. Lunch in the Lodge was very much anticipated! Beth and Kevin agree!

6K-Lunch1

Darn..(thinks Chuck) Heather has as glass of wine!

6K-Lunch2

While Terry (middle) contemplates his tail wheel, Lee dreams about a new Warp Drive Prop..

6K-Lunch3

Larry and John pretend they are not hungry

6k-Lunch4

Two copilots, Alicia and Larry’s friend ? complete the group except for missing Gerhard who took the photos (Did we ever eat lunch?)

6K-Lunch5

The east side back to Midland was a tail chase led by Kevin and Chuck with poor Dennis whipping his 80 ponies to keep up. The second section of 4, dawdled along behind John and Gerhard.

Dinner that evening was a Wasaga Beach Barbeque where Brittany and Ellen Dunlop joined the Wednesday aviators. Does it seem we are always eating?

6K-BH

Brittany and Diane with John and Lee at the BBQ.

6K-BH5

View to the north showing the Nottawasaga River. Larry and his friend flank Gloria and James West

6K-BH1

Dennis, Alicia and Ellen eat while Lee and John discuss Warp Drive Props at the barbeque.

6K-BH2

Beth and Kevin (always smiling!)

August 07 Briefing Thursday morning showed ample evidence of last night’s “spirits”

7B-Briefing

We decided to see if we could pack seven aircraft into “Hockey Stick” on Bone Island and guess what, we did!

7B-Bone1

Here are the last two, around the corner..

7B-Bone2

Yes, there was the compulsory “warm” swim..

7B-Swim

Followed by the sandwich on a log. (4 folks still in the water.)

7B-Lunch

This couple used their dinghy to take the group photos from the water.

7P-PTQ

That final evening we took on some antifreeze at the Hotel bar.

7B-Bar

Heather and Beth too (they would need it!)

7B-Bar2

Then proceeded to freeze our butts at Henry’s Fish Restaurant!

7B-Henrys1

Feeling no pain for sure!

Thank you Frank and Dave. Yes, over nine Georgian Gaggles we have learned how to set the table and provide for contingencies. But as Don and Russ and others who have planned yearly fly-ins, it is all about 'blue skies and light winds'.

Without a doubt, last week had the best of weather! We also had the best of camaraderie. I hope you guys appreciate how huge it is to have the ladies attend!

Dan Nickens - Aug 20,2014 Viewers | Reply
There are no wider SeaRey smiles, John, than the ones that happen when the ladies are around. Looking at your great photos it is easy to see why. What a phenomenal place to fly, and what great people to fly with!

Mid-jump thought: 'I wonder if this is the one day of summer water temps in
Canada?' (Just kidding....)

John Robert Dunlop - Aug 21,2014 Viewers | Reply
Actually Frank, you may not be 'just kidding'. This has been a cool summer for all of us on the Great Lakes. Thankfully, among the Thirty Thousand Islands of Georgian Bay, there are countless sheltered and/or shallow coves where cold water temperatures are warmed by the sun

Dan Nickens - Aug 21,2014 Viewers | Reply
Right. There are shallow bays and water warmed by the sun in Antarctica too, John. Water temperatures are comparable. The only difference is the ice in Georgian Bay melted (barely), what? Last month? Heather and Kevin deserve official polar bear status! I'd need a full immersion suit to duplicate their bravery in the face of such a chilly dunking.

What Southerners? Show me their credentials. Anyone who says that frigid water was 'pleasant' is no southerner.

John Robert Dunlop - Aug 30,2014 Viewers | Reply
Hmmmm.... the 'sandwich on a log' photo clearly provides evidence that James and Gloria were not unduly chilled by their experience. But then, perhaps folks from Texas are not far enough south to qualify as southerners
Dan Nickens - Aug 30,2014 Viewers | Reply
Right. Texans are 'westeners.' Besides, where is the photo of them in the water. I never said the sunlit log was cold!

John Robert Dunlop - Sep 02,2014 Viewers | Reply
    Hi Thomas,
a. After suitable editing, each photo is reduced in quality, 150 to 250 kb and 1000 pixel width.

b. Text is pre-formatted by adding some HTML code, and then posted to News.
It may look something like this:
b. Text is <u>pre-formatted</u> by adding some HTML code, and then posted to <b>News</b><p>
The important code is <br> for a line break, and especially <p> for a new paragraph (before each imbedded photo.)

c. Once your text has been posted, choose Edit and then select: 'Add Files'. Load all your pre-sized photos. Make sure that they are all the same width..

d. Choose: 'Advanced (allow HTML)' option.

e. Place your cursor at the end of a section of text where you wish to insert the photo. If there is not a <p> , add this code to start a new paragraph.

f. From the list of 'Added Files' find the desired photo and select: 'Insert Picture in HTML'

g. Move your cursor to the next photo insert location and complete e, f and g until all the photos are automatically inserted in HTML code.

h. You have spent all this time editing this one News entry. Now all you have to do is hit 'Save >>' and you can view all your fine work! (and mistakes

Don Maxwell - Sep 02,2014 Viewers | Reply
Excellent instructions, John. You can also copy and paste photo locations, instead of moving the cursor (a.k.a.insertion point). And you can add certain other html tags, such as for bold, italics, or color.
But remember that any links you insert into an html page won't work unless you also add the correct tags. You can google html tags for info on how to do those tricks. Also remember that some computers won't automatically re-size photos that are too wide for their displays or windows.
(If you'd like one user's feedback on the practice of placing a large number of photos on one long long looooooong page (whether by your method or just by adding them normally)--well, it can make an awfully long page, and as soon as people start replying, everyone has to scroll all the way down to the bottom every time they want to read a new reply. It's especially a big PIA when using an iPad or iPhone, with no instant shortcut to the bottom. And it can be confusing when a reply is in the middle of a page because MyFamily provides no way of going directly to it from What's New. So my own personal preference is to split long pages into shorter, more manageable ones. Or to post photos in Photos when they're not predominately news items.)

John Robert Dunlop - Sep 02,2014 Viewers | Reply
Well Don, I acknowledge your critical feedback for users of iPads and iPhones. Must be a PITA for sure...
Just thought it would be fun for those who look at photos using more traditional computers. And the looooooong page should actually be much quicker to navigate between photos than if they were in the photo section.. Just grab the scroll bar on the right and zip between photos or, right to the bottom...
(no scroll bar?? !!

Well I tried my mouse scroll wheel and it took 5 seconds.
But when I tried it on my BlackBerry Playbook touch screen it took 18 seconds...

In any case, I'm often too lazy to click on a photo to see it full size. And the photo section is often just too tedious when looking at a group of photos with captions from one event. Variety is the spice of life, mate

Frank A. Carr - Sep 02,2014 Viewers | Reply
I find the large, consecutive photos embedded along with captions to be preferable
John, as it makes it much simpler to follow the story than having to click to enlarge
each photo and then go back to the thread.

If only it were easy or at least understandable! Will this feature be included in the
new site I wonder?

Don Maxwell - Sep 02,2014 Viewers | Reply
Sorry for seeming crabby, John. The method I like best is one that MyFamily doesn't provide: the ability to make a page with several medium sized pictures like those in the Photos section, that load full-size when you click on them.

What we have now in a Photos page is one medium pic and then optional thumbnails that are a bit too small for viewing without loading the full versions. I'd like those thumbnails to be about thrice the dimensions (9x the area) and still hot, so that clicking on them gets the full-size version if you want to examine it closely.

By default, News is similar to Photos, except that you have text instead of a medium-size photo and then the optional thumbnails--meaning that you can do your html tricks in Photos, too.

(It's possible to make a MyFamily page with two sets of photos--medium ones that link to large ones--but that takes far more work than it's worth.)

Another thing I wish MyFamily had was a keyboard shortcut for What's New. As it is, to get there from the bottom of this page we have to scroll all the way back up to the top, or use the computer's own shortcut of Command+UpCursor on a Mac or-- um, I've forgotten what it is in Windwoes--Ctrl+PgUp?

I'd better go flying now.
