If one were to move to Florida, where would one look for lake front property that was seaplane friendly? Least expensive to most expensive, thanks.

Tom - that's a tough question, but in general, I would say that as you near the coasts and any larger cities, the costs become prohibitive. I would think the least expensive areas would be running down the central 'spine' of the state which is still pretty rural. The X-61 crew is just north of Orlando, but not on a lake. If you wait 5 years, I don't think there will be many, if any, larger lakes that are not fully developed and there are a helluva lot of lakes here.

Tom, I am developing a water ski community in Deland, FL which I intend to be 'Searey Friendly'. The cost of water front property anywhere in Florida has become very expensive and I only see it going up even more like Ken said... 'Our lots are priced starting at $795,000 for 10 acres lakefront with 150ft - 300ft of frontage. I will be living here myself and plan to build a hanger on site for my Searey when it is completed. Lake will be 2300 feet long with a North/South orientation. Check it out at www.skideland.com. We are also 3 miles from Deland Airport.
For 800K, I'd expect a house, a pool and about 10 hot chicks in bikinis serving me drinks all day long. I guess I'm just not in touch with Florida prices.

    Is that Canadian $?

Kevin Zibolski - Apr 28,2006 Viewers | Reply
I hear ya Dave! But things have changed here over the years. I know places on some of the larger lakes where a 1/2 acre lot will fetch 2 million plus.

I'm not sure it's just Florida prices, Dave. I was just offered $600K for my place on Lake Norman, NC. I thought it was worth about half that. The house is only 1200 sq feet but the guy said he was going to bulldoze it anyway. He just wanted the view. I told him no dice. I needed that water runway in the back yard. Word up here is the 'half backs' are driving up the cost of lake front properties.

For you flat landers, a half backer in North Carolina is someone who moved from Michigan (sorry Gromak) to Florida, found it too hot, and then moved half way back.

Kevin--what an extravagance, when a SeaRey needs only 32 feet of waterfrontage! A SeaRey lot should cost only $169,600.

In an all too common clash of needs and requirements, Don, the county I live in requires a minimum of 600' of lakefront to qualify for a seaplane base.

I'm looking for land here in California to develope into a ski lake, but it's just as expensive as Florida. California is just not that seaplane friendly either. However a ski lake seems about the best way to protect your right for seaplane operations. It still needs to be fairly rural because Californians just live to shut peoples' fun down. One other conflict is skiers want the lake perpendicular to the prevailing winds, but I could live with that. I have been operating out of several of the ski lake in the area and have been inspired to pursue this dream( because it's just too cool!). I'm even considering Florida, because you guys are in seaplane heaven down there. That's why I asked about general areas where people would like to live( Minnesota, 1000 lakes?). Man's got to have a goal, otherwise he sits on the couch and gets fat.

Tom, north Florida, Lake city, Jasper, north of Gainsville, still have some bargains.
However do not wait. Florida is being sold out at an alarming rate Especially
waterfront! Good luck!

Hey Phil, Leave us out of this. North Florida is no Good. Lousy weather, lots of bugs, snakes, alligators, and real live snappin' turtles. Unfortunately, we've also been discovered, however still a bargain compared to the rest of Florida.

Rick is right............. way too many crawly bugs in North Florida. The roaches up here will scare your dog!

    Tom,
Using any real estate search engine, research waterfront homes and lots in Deltona and Deland, FL. They are both just outside of Orlando and the prices are so much lower for lakefront housing. Many of the lakes in that area are large enough for Seareys. Don't even bother looking in Orlando unless you plan to top $500K. I know of some nice lakefront Deltona homes going for about $200K. What a difference.
Steve DiGiacomo

Thanks Steve, finding lake front property is not the problem, it's finding the ones which allow seaplane operations.

    Tom;
I would recomend finding an airpark near where you would like to live. You would have your own hanger and airstrip. The lake idea is good but, no hanger and you will have to deal with zoning, neighbors, ramps etc. The summer storms blowing across the water gets to 35/40 MPH. I'm not sure about how much wind the Searey can take.
Lake front property in Fla sells for a LOT of money. You can buy a Hanger home for about half of what a place on a lake will cost. There are numerous airparks in Fla. Papa Charlie

P.C., it sounds like you made you made a great financial move, but don't you miss being on the water? Rember, you can't take it with you and your kids are better off without it. I do wish you all the best in your new home. Home is where you make it.

Pat Coyle's house on Doctors Lake may be for Sale just south of Jax. Should be pics on this site somewhere, as we had a mini flyin there, and are planning another one. Pat's new beau wants a house with a grand entrance. I told him to keep the place and ditch the beau. Harder to find a good seaplane base than it is to find a good wom......
I better shut up before I get myself in trouble.!!

For anyone that might be interested, a friend of mine has a nice piece of property for sale in North Florida. It is a double wide mobile home on two wooded acres 1/8 th mile from Thunderbird Airpark, a private grass strip. I understand that there is water everywhere, including Lake Como and the St. John's River. Price in in the neighborhood of 130K.

I have 175 acres for sale on the Cumberland Plateau. Has two lakes, $350,000. Great place for airstrip up to 2000ft.
