The local Nashville news just ran a nice story on Dale Weakley, the owner of the fly-in community where we are moving. I think we are going to like it there... Dale and I are like two peas in a pod... hairbrain ideas all. They're my forte I think

See link below:

Story aired on Tuesday, May 2 on the 4:30pm segment of News 2
Pleasant View Pilot Builds Airfield http://www.wkrn.com/node/20555

FYI - the story says Dale's fly-in 'neighborhood' is 17 acres... its more like 70. There are 12 lots total, all are 4 to 6 acres. 4 lots are still available.

Also here's our latest house design:

We had hoped to break ground in March. Here it is May and we're on our second house design and third builder... its a humbling experience. Its gonna be trailer-city for the Smith's for their first 6 or 9 months in Tennessee. I suspect I'll be spending about 1/4 of my time overseeing construction and 3/4 trying to keep my wife happy!
Attachments:

Cool design Bret. Can't wait to come stay with you and tour Tenn.

You have my sympathies Bret. We went through the house process in 2003++, spent 6 months designing, 12 months construction, and are 2 years into trying to get subs back to fix their mistakes and oversights--despite almost full time oversight by me. Humbling fits, but it's worse than that, but words don't just seem to describe it. Good luck. Oh yes, it is worth it after all is said and done.

Thanks Frank. I'm hoping that the more painfull the process is, the more we will love the place 'cause if thats true then at this rate we are going to find the finished product to be unbelievable!

Nice house. Where's the rotating beacon with hog callin' option?

I like the way you think Eric!

Nice place Bret, we are thinking of replacing our cabin by the lake with plan CHP-20420.

Cool plans are great.
Good luck!

Great Robert! We'll be ready with cold drinks and tales to tell...

Anybody ever heard of a 'Cracker' design? When I saw that, I knew this house was designed for me

Robert Lee - May 05,2006 Viewers | Reply
    Bret,

There are many modern cracker design homes in Steinhatchee. They are popular in the coastal resort type towns. It is a very cool design. Low open (tall) windows and tall ceilings were key elements in keeping Florida Cracker houses cool in the days before air conditioning.
Thanks Robert. I didn't know all that. Cool. We love the high bedrooms with the balconies. Many builders say we're making a mistake by having a master bedroom on the top floor. They say resale value is better if the master bedroom is on the ground floor. Screw it! We aren't building it for resale!

So Bret are any lots avialable? & if so how to get the details. I'm reducing real estate holdings in NY except my seaplane base. Reccon I'll keep that for now.

Yea, Tom. There are 4 good runway lots available. 2 have nice fishing ponds on them. You can reach Dale by phone or email. 615 218-3316, Bell74466@charter.net

Give him a shout. He's a real nice guy and loves to talk about his airpark. It'd be a hoot to have another SeaReyer there. The other families on the field are great too. There are 4 houses there now. We can't hardly come to town without them having us over for a cookout. Its in great location too... out in the country but only about 20 miles outside of Nashville. I guess you can tell I'm smitten with the place... thats because before I discovered it, I was going to take on building my own runway. Now, I don't have to do that, I've got some great new friends and best of all, my wife loves the place!

I've added the plat map here. Tract 1 is ours. Tract 2, 3, 4 and 9 are still available. Attachments:

I'll contact him. If you don't mind send me some location info and any other you care to share. I have built 2 houses and always interested in how the gestapo is & all that. My email is in the members sect.

Tom Lansing - May 05,2006 Viewers | Reply
Hey I just thought of something. Maybe building 2 would be almost as easy as 1. Besides after yours we would have made all the mistakes, right?

Bret Smith - May 05,2006 Viewers | Reply
Sure, all the lots are priced between 120k and 150k I think and of course, its negotiable. You'll have to talk to Dale for any more detail on $$$$. City water runs down the runway and power is nearby too. All have been soil tested for septic. They are basically ready for building. There are mostly farms out in this area.

He hasn't really started selling the place yet. Its all been word of mouth. But now that in the grass is coming in nice on the new part of the runway he's going to start.

Dale's address is:
1255 Oaklawn Rd
Pleasant View, TN 37035 so you can plug that into Goggle Earth or Mapquest or whatever to see the locale. Last I checked the satelitte photos where pretty old. The runway had not been extended yet...

Bret, june is about here and you have not moved yet. Get your butt down here so you can teach me water landings. Thanks for posting the pics. OH YES, did you find any virgins on the islands?

Kenneth Leonard - May 19,2006 Viewers | Reply
Charlie - the question is, are they still virgins?

Charlie Huskey - May 19,2006 Viewers | Reply
Ken, most likely not. We`ll have to go there next year to see how many 'LITTLE BRETS' are running around in diapers. IF so, there will be no more 'LITTLE BRETS' when Alex gets through with him we`ll call him BOBBIT BRET.

Bret Smith - May 20,2006 Viewers | Reply
    You guys are killing me

Charlie, I'll be down there sometime next week if it quits freakin raining! But that will be only to deliver the SeaRey and do a little work and then I'm back up to RI to start packin. We'll be there for keeps in July... but ya know Charlie... I ain't no SeaRey water landing instructor. I'll be glad to sit out by the lake and watch you practice. If you ever get in a pinch I can just shoot ya down. Thats what friends are for right?

Ya know in the Navy, when the new fighter pilots are doing thier first blue water (away from land) carrier landings, when somebody can't get it aboard, the sure fire way to get them to land is telling them the carrier is the only place there is food.
