I did a normal approach on the far side of beach cove, avoiding swimmers as a matter of safety
and courtesy. In the distance, a jet ski operator saw me, kicked her machine around and
paralleled my track. As I neared liftoff speed, she veered into me! I barely cleared her, turned
away from her direction per USCG regs, settled down my passenger. We came back to the
beach to give kids a chance to climb on the machine, and ended up in an awkward encounter
with a deputy sheriff. At first, he was puckered up in the 'seaplane at fault' mode, my
description of our performance requirements and what happens when a craft intentionally
violates our takeoff run seemed to soften his stance a bit. Still, it was not an acceptable
interaction.

As a technique, I visit with our river authority every season to leave contact information and
solicit feedback. Ditto with every law enforcement jurisdiction. All that effort is designed to
preclude having to deal with someone who catches a glimpse of a conflict between seaplane
and watercraft, jumps to the wrong conclusion.

As I told his boss today, this is the last time I endeavor to explain right of way to one of his
staff. If it takes a class for officers, a written handout, or me abandoning my small town's
tourist area (assuming I'm an attraction, an asset) we're going to dispense with this nonsense.

So, be careful and thoughtful out there. Most people are great to be around; but, every once
in awhile you’ll stumble on a nut-case!

Andy - I read in the paper - and perhaps on this site, about a boater to repeatedly charged at a float plane attempting to take off. The boater was followed by the plane to his home and visited by police at pilot's request. He objected to the airplane noise and was trying to prevent takeoff and teach a lesson. He was arrested on felony charges for interfering with the aircraft.

    I like that.

'Can't help but think this gal had seen me perform solo, didn't understand how dramatically
different things are with an 80hp bird Dual...

If I recall correctly, the boater mistakenly believed that seaplanes were illegal on that lake, and thought it was within his right to interfere with it's takeoff. He found out otherwise.

Here it is: Attachments:
