I love all the landmarks on the way in.

My son is learning to fly with the (R) CAF at the moment and the surprise is that they are taught circuits etc by landmarks. So what happens when you do an away landing and you don't know the landmarks?

When I learned to fly it was all about the relationship to the runway. 'About 1 mile parallel,' 'Turn base at 800 with the threshold jusr behind you left shoulder,' etc.

What happened to all that ?
My daughter was also taught by landmark and it didn't make sense to me either for exactly
the same reason. Unless, of course, they never expect one to fly to any other airport.

Can you not come in facing the trees? I used to use a strip in the Grand Canyon many years ago with permission of the owners of course, Cessna 172 and had just enough space to get in and out, no chance of a go around as you landed facing the canyon wall and took off the opposite direction. There was quite a few wrecked planes against the canyon wall that were left there as a reminder, I used the same landing site by copter as well a few times, it was best to approach like a fixed as the thermals on the wall were diabolical.
