We're having a splash-in on Saturday, August 10, this year, and we hope you can come.

Here's a link to the full invitation, with the location, info about taxiing ashore, etc.: https://amphibflyer.com/

= Don & Carol Maxwell

P.S. Why in August this year? Because that's THE weekend day between May and November with the tide close to noon. (Fresh water, despite the tide.)

Sadly Don, I will once again be sitting on a 1200ft Chinese Oil tanker. Will miss the fly in by 4 days. But there is always next year!!! I
really want to attend one of these years. May have to retire first....and I am good with that!!! Have fun!!!

Dennis - we could form a Searey squadron to rescue Randy from pesky pirates.

Planning to come with a friend on Saturday, Don. Thank you in advance.

Excellent, Jeff! The weather looks good so far--partly cloudy, with a light breeze from the north-ish.

Don Maxwell - Aug 10,2019   Viewers  | Reply
The weather was outstanding, and all together there were 14 airplanes and a boat. (One plane had some difficulties that delayed it, but it managed a couple of nice splash-and-goes anyway.) There were lots of excellent multi-plane fly-bys, great fun to watch, and several of the neighbors let us know that they had been delighted by the whole show. The attached video frame is an example--six planes!      Attachments:

Update: Here's a neat panorama that I borrowed from Kevin Manning's Facebook page. His original pans when you turn your phone; it's automatic here.

Kev's seaplane count was premature. The final count was 14--15 if you include the Searey that stopped by the night before but the pilot had to fly to Guam in the morning.

10 Seareys
1 Seabee
1 Maule
1 SuperCub
1 Carbon Cub
1 Legend Cub

Thanks to all who came! You made it a great day.

    Don, who travelled farthest?

Don Maxwell - Aug 18,2019   Viewers  | Reply
    Here's the data, Mark:

I think the farthest by air this time was Brian Furnell, from KFRG, Long Island, NY, about 280 nm each way. Farthest by car was probably Chuck Norton, from Mooresville, NC-- only 210 nm by air, but a LOT farther by car.

Kevin D'Angelo set the annual splash-in same-day distance record a couple of years ago by flying his Searey here that day from Buffalo, NY, about 340 nm, arriving shortly past noon.

The flight distance record just for the splash-in is held by Peter Magnuson, of Ocala, FL, in his Experimental Searey LSX, about 550 nm, but he arrived the night before.

The longest road distance just for the splash-in was by Charlie Pickett, who drove his motorhome from Taunton, Mass, last year, a long damn drive.

There have been 8 or 10 one-day flights (not counting mine) between here and Searey Central in Tavares and other places in central Florida, but not for the splash-in. That's something like 600 nm.

The longest international flight so far has been John Dunlop and Dennis Vogan in their two Seareys, from Shelburne, Ontario, "only" about 430 nm, but they had to cross Lake Erie, clear customs, and deal with some difficult weather, so they had a long day.

If you're looking for splash-in records, check with Russ Garner. His Searey Gatherings were probably the most popular seaplane splash-ins of all time and of all places. Beginning with the first one in 2000, people came from all over the world, just to BE there. Garner's Landing was a kind of Mecca for SeaRey people. I think it would be terrific if he and Lou Ann were still hosting them.

Don, You and Carol gather such a fun group of pilots. So much fun! Thanks!

There were 40 or 50 people, including 6 little kids; 9 Seareys, 1 Seabee, 1 Maule, 1 Legend Cub, 1 Carbon Cub, 1 SuperCub, all amphibious, and 1 speedy little boat.

Outstanding, Don. I hope you have more pictures. Or are you working on one of your super video presentations?

Don Maxwell - Aug 12,2019   Viewers  | Reply
Hah. There will be some stills and video. Unfortunately, I had set out several video cameras where I hoped they'd get good wide shots, but one was in a bad location, one stopped recording every few minutes and had to be restarted manually, and the one I thought most likely to get almost everything never started recording at all. And the battery in a small iPhone-controlled drone died before the video got saved on the phone.

Fortunately, Jeff Arnold's passenger had brought a really classy drone and said he'd send me the footage. The drone itself was impressive: it recognized Class C airspace--about 3 nm away--and required an override before it would fly here at all. Later it refused to fly under certain wings and between closely-spaced fuselages if it didn't think there was enough room for it to navigate safely. It was great (though subtle) fun to watch in action.

Glade it went off without a hitch Don... Garner's Landing is under contract to sell in the next month or
two Lou and I are looking to downsize and maybe get to do some traveling. Plan is to hangar the
Searey at Winter Haven for the time being.

For you folks who haven't been to Garner's Landing, here's how it looked one spring day, maybe ten years ago. But I've seen it with more Seareys than that.      Attachments:

I agree with everyone else, Don. That's quite an event you put on and I do hope to make it next year. Can't wait to see the video and more pics.

The day was beautiful for flying and fourteen seaplanes splashed in at the Taj Mahouse in Shangri-La (di-da), on the James River.

Easy beach access for amphibians was courtesy of Neal and Janet, the pilots who live next door.

I had planned this to be an easy video by stationing three cameras where I thought they would record most of the action. Alas, one was too low to get anything useful, another stopped after recording only a few minutes, and the third never started recording at all.

Fortunately, several smarter people contributed excellent video clips and stills, and I was able to assemble them into a rather different video than I'd planned. I hope you enjoy it. (About 12 minutes.)
