Could you elaborate on what a beyond state-of-the-art carbon fiber Searey/914 Searey kit might be?

Thanks everybody for input. I am still looking and have narrowed the search to a C-hull with a 912s or 914. In the search I have heard many comments from owners and non owners I would like some feedback on some comments I recently heard on the Searey. I was told that the kit as sold is of poor quality and components subject to corrosion and hull breakdown and leakage if in the water for long. Also that the airplane is a constant headache to maintain due to component failure. What do present owners who have had one for awhile think about this assessment?
By the way, don't shoot the messenger

Kevin, the SeaRey Technical Site is the best place for technical discussions. But I'm pleased to report that in 346 hours of moderately hard use, my SeaRey has had no problems that weren't caused by pilot --er, uh, exuberance. Building it was relatively easy. The quality of the kit and its component parts was excellent. My SeaRey has floated in the lagoon at the Oshkosh seaplane base for the better part of a week, two years in a row, with no leakage at all. Nothing has corroded yet, even though almost every flight has included at least one water operation, some in salt water. (I rinse it off in fresh water afterward.) The hull is as rugged as any speed boat's and more durable than any aluminum seaplane's. Maintenance is simple, minimal, and straghtforward--especially compared to other seaplanes. Of course, as with any airplane, there are a few things I'd like different, but very few of them and they're minor things, anyway. So all in all, I think the assessment you've cited is baloney.

Pure Bull S---! Got the 914 turbo love it. Little to no maintenance. Cheapest thing in the air to fly. I love mine.

I agree with Don Maxwell. I bought mine from John Haines last Spring and I've had a ball with it. Before buying I toured the factory in Orlando and even considered a new one for a while. In any event, at the factory I had my first ride and then was hooked. One of my sons and I flew the plane last June from Lantana, Florida to Lake Sunapee, N.H. Great trip. As for problems, nothing more than routine maintenance (knock on wood). This is a well-designed aircraft with an excellent engine (mine has the 912S). One word of caution, however: it is not a toy. Although I had well over 7000 hours and single and multi-engine ratings when I bought the plane I welcomed John Haines' generous offer to work with me (for as long as it took) to get me thoroughly familiar with the aircraft. John built it (he'd built two different planes before) and no one could possibly know it better, but the time that he spent wit me was invaluable. If you haven't yet found one I would urge you to make it a condition of the sale that the seller take whatever amount of time is necessary to acclimate you to the particular plane. If you've already bought I think I'd still go back to the seller and ask for some dual. Can't possibly hurt. Anyway, best of luck. Dexter Coffin
P.S.- Sorry, mine's not for sale.

Hi Kevin...I have kit # 070 and close to 600 hrs on it...400 of which were put on by me as I am the 3rd owner. It is a great airplane...not a toy and must be treated as such. The quality of constuction is very important and as I am not a builder, I have some very good help and expertise to rely on. Any problems I have had were of my own making, or caused by shoddy work or poor mtce done by the previous owners. Learning how to fly it ...safely and properly...is of the utmost importance.Prior to learning how to fly the SeaRey,I had over 30,000 hrs.....and a float endorsement. It was fun, and a challange, and I am still learning.

We had our Searey 1DK023 operating totally out of Salt Water since it was built in 1995 with very little corrosion. No leakage whatsoever and a totally dependable powerplant 912UL with a 3-blade composite prop. Put it together right and look after it and it will provide hours of fun and excitement!

Thank you to all who have helped with my quest to find a searey. just a couple of weeks ago I finally aquired one in Orlando and brought it up to Buffalo before the hurricane. I have to admit the 20 hours I have put on the bird in the weeks since I bought it, have been the most fun I have had in the last 25 years of flying. Hope to hook up with a lot of you next summer.
Kevin

Been in the water as much as the weather allows which hasn't been alot lately with 30 to 40 kt winds all too frequent. Also have had to tweak a few things like bearings and turbo balancing, cables frayed ect. But I enjoy fiddling. The next best thing to building it my self which I don't have time for at this jucture. Looking forward to a few more days of pure fun splashing before the lakes freeze up
