Description: Soon we had landed on Maranacook and taxied up to her sister’s cabin. The in-person sight and presence of a SeaRey soon quells any insecurities. I mean, SeaReys don’t look like contraptions. They look like good, fun airplanes and it wasn’t long before Ginny (her sister) was hiking a leg into the SeaRey and Amory (the brother-in-law) was hoping into the Buccaneer. They seemed to have a great time and I know we both enjoyed taking them for a ride.
Noon came all too soon and it was time for Alex and me to head home. I had my “bad flight” checklist on hand from the prior day and immediately started to work by dumping ALL of the camping gear at Ginny and Amory’s lake house. We could pick that crap up later, my main priority was for me and Alex to have a nice flight home. Like I said, Steve and Robin were camping another night on the island but Alex and I had to get back to the kids. That was a good thing because it forced me to take real ownership of the flight planning. We went to Twicthell’s to fill-up on fuel and I called flight service and got a full preflight briefing. They said there was a solid layer of clouds at 3,000 ft for the entire route but otherwise it was smooth sailing. Then at the pilot’s station at Twitchell’s, I plotted our course on the sectional map in pencil. It looked good. A straight shot home would avoid all controlled airspace and the gps predicted a 2:17 hour ETE.
With the course plotted on the sectional, Alex took control of that and then started reading-off frequency changes to me. Nothing we had to do but it was nice having a co-pilot and monitoring the frequencies of every passing airport was more than I usually do. It was just one more workload item, one element of stress that was now gone, along with the weight loss and lighter winds… it made for a wonderfully boring flight home.
Alex and I watched as town after town and road after road passed below us. The air was smooth, our little plane was purring and we were on our way to meet our kids at the demolition derby. Who could ask for more than that? The trip was ending but happiness was the theme of the moment. We knew that although this one was soon over, there were many more ahead.

OH OH OH how nice it would be to be 40 again. Great viewing early morn while the remains of Frannie are slapping the crap out of my little mountain cabin. Great pics Bret, glad yu had a great trip. Hang on to all that camping gear, you will need it when you get to Tennessee.

The camping gear will be back soon. I just have to figure out what to leave behind next time because that new air mattress is now on the mandatory equipment list. You see its all relative. When you're forty you say, OH OH OH how nice it would be to be 20 again when I could sleep on the ground and still walk the next day...

Thank you, Bret, for providing welcome relief to hurricane cleanup chores! I can't wait to go back up North and pick up 220WT.

Thanks. It was a good trip and I enjoy being able to post this stuff up here on the site. Taking the time to take pictures while you're traveling is not always easy and then making yourself write it up is pain too so I appreciate everybodys encouraging comments.

damn if Indianapolis didn't just lose... my first team is the Titans but I went to school at UT with Peyton Manning so Indy is a close second. I dread the next lunch with Frank Gracy and the crap I'm gonna have to take...

but that's not the reason for this post... a note of interest is the fact that I finally for the first time ever, started dropping the manual gear in the water and taxiing up on the beach. I have the big ole 600's and it worked fine. Unlock the overcenters, foot on the johnson bar, hand out on the tire... one fairly lame push... and then plunk, all set.

I'm glad to have another trick in my toolbox. Hydro gear is for skinny professor boys with dress socks and tennis shoes who didn't even know there was a football game tonight...
