Description: There's something pleasant and satisfying about the flight home after a long trip. For me it almost always seems like the best leg of the trip and that’s funny because your trip is almost over, the fun has been had and its about time to jump back into everyday life where there’s work, and house chores, and kids to mind...
Buts that’s how it is this day with Alex sitting next to me in our little seaplane, her finger marking the point on the chart where we were while she gazed out the window toward Boston. Boston's skyline was barely visible out on the wavy extreme of the horizon. It was probably still 60 miles away. It was unbelievable to have such great visibility. We were an hour into our 2 hour and 20 minute flight home. We would meet the kids later at the Seekonk Speedway. They were there with the babysitter at the Labor Day weekend Demolition Derby spectacular. I was looking forward to that as well. That kind of trailer park entertainment is not Alex's bag but that's where kids are great for dads like me. Moms are happy when their kids are happy and kids like the Labor Day Demolition Derby spectacular!
So we were purring along at 85 mph at 2200 ft just watching the world slip slowly past and seeing home getting closer and closer. It was nice and safe and comfortable and our trip had been a good one so we just felt good and rested and just plain happy.
This contentedness now, I think was also in due in part to the fact that the trip had not started quite as well. The morning before, we met Steve and Robin at the airport at about 8:30am. This overnight camping trip had been planned and canceled twice before. So, we were more than prepared when the forecast finally allowed us to go. And when I say “more than prepared”, I mean that every time I got the gear ready to go, I would see something else that I wanted to bring... so by the third attempt, I had a lot of gear: a tent, 2 sleeping bags, air mattress, 2 folding chairs, clothes, misc gear and tools and parts, clothes, water, blah, blah, blah... In other words, the plane with full fuel was just under its max gross weight.
So instead of Streaker being her usual sporty self, she was more a little fat kid with asthma. But she did well considering what was asked of her and besides, this is cross country flying and that’s the bed you make when you do it in a light sport aircraft. You make that compromise for the ability to go somewhere quickly and easily that would take a 4+ hour commute in a car plus you'd then need a boat to get to the island we were going to.
But Streaker's draggyness plus a big bumpy head wind along with my minimal flight planning due to my tendency to let Steve do it (and then just follow him)... well it just all added up and made for a pretty stressful flight for me. Alex took some Dramamine to get proactive with the motion sickness and she fell asleep, so I had plenty of time to sit there and stew while I was wrestling with Streaker and doing all that other pilot shit.
