I was Jones'n for a flight all day today. Each time I prairie-dogged out of my cube to deal with something 'important & ASAP' I was mesmerized by the clear fall day on the other side of the rows of gigantic plate glass windows. When I slipped out for lunch and got a real taste of the day, I knew I had to figure out a way to make it happen. I called Steve on the cell while walking through the big corporate parking lot full of cool cars owned by people that couldn't be nearly as interesting as me.

(From my phone -&gt 'Hey Steve whatcha doin?... yea, I hear you.... good day for flyin... well, wanna go?... I can slip out and be at the airport at 5... Sunset is at 6:20... Yea, I'm jones'n to fly so either you go with me or we take two planes... ok, we take two planes....... hehehe, yea, she does have some BIG ones.... anyway, see you at the airport at 5?... ok, cool Robin is coming, well I'll see if Alex wants to come and we'll get a babysitter... Yooooowllll, see you at 5!'

The babysitter was busy and Robin (Steve's wife) was sick so a modified plan developed between Steve and my wife while I battled through afternoon in Dilbertville. Alex and the kids would pick up sandwiches and meet us at the airport ASAP after 5pm. They would go with Steve in the Lake Buc and we'd have dinner while watching the sun set on Manchaug Pond just east of Webster, MA. Cool.

The rendezvous was delayed. Getting kids ready, traffic, bottlenecks at the sandwich shop... It was 5:50 before we were wheels up... Sunset was still 6:20.

We skidded in on a light ripple at Manchaug Pond at 6:10. The scene was gorgeous with the low-lying sun… enough to lure you into forgetting that you really need to alight before it gets too dark… not before sunset, but before it gets too dark… talk about trying to define the indefinable…

As I taxied up, I could see the swagger of a familiar two year old boy on the little mound of mash potatoes Steve was calling a “sand bar”. Elvis, my son, was a sight for a dad to see. Everyday I’m a dad I want to tell MY parents, “now I understand”.
