Description: Just got back from a dual mission at a fresh water reservoir at Melton, very steep sides and a real canyon approach req. Snoopy wanted some back seat time and I needed to 'recent' my float time.
Conditions were glassy with many speed boats, we had about eight circuits each on water & land, the thing about this little beauty is that you can fly a cuicuit without touching the trim, & I must admit I did a touch & go with the water rudders down & thought I'd got away with it untill Snoopy cought me pulling them up after T/O.
cruise at 5000rpm gives about 75/80 kts, I like the Searey (comfort a big plus) but these are a very nice alternative.
Thanks Snoopy I had a ball

What a beautiful day for Pirates and planes! Those sneaky water rudders are a problem for all the floaties. I was told to do a disgusting FARTS check before taking off on floats (Flaps - set, Area - clear, Rudder - up, Trim -set, Stick -back) but sometimes the pretty scenery just makes the stinky stuff forgetable.

Thats a very good one Dan that I'd forgot!!, my lame excuss is that I took off with them up but the cable lug falls out if not really pushed home, & of course I did'nt do a proper check on final.

So other than some drag, what's the problem?

If you have any rudder deflection on touch down with two water rudders you get twice the yaw, (than a Searey)plus a moderate nose down moment due to the water rudders being the first to contact the water.
On glassy water it is controllerable but not cool.

Yes sir, Jack, and it can also beat the heck out the floats and mounting hardware.

Hi Jack and others, if anyone thought it was hard doing a glassy landing using instruments, should try using nothing but ASI and side window. The rudders did make for a slight yaw, but Jack corrected smartly. The boat coming the other way though had me nearly jumping overboard, but Jack took it in his stride and off we went again. By the way, at 5000rpm, I get 80-85kts - sorry had to correct uncle Jack there. Also I have an article for HO&S for floatie's, how does one post it? Can you send to private email address please.

Have a safe and Happy New Year's party

Snoopy
