don, i like your neat seal on the window/windshield, where did you get the latch from?

Rick Oreair - Feb 18,2005 Viewers | Reply
Dave, that looks like factory issue if I'm not mistaken. Of course factory issue changes from time to time...

It's like the factory issue latch, but silver-colored instead of brass plated. (Excellent local hardware store.)
Don,
This is my view of golf as well--if I get your drift. But what was wrong with the brass latch--did the color clash with the GPS display?

Frank C., I only like golf courses with long, straight fairways and well-kept turf, aligned with the wind.

Nothing else in the whole airplane was brass-colored, so I thought the factory latches looked odd--looked like window latches (which they are). I tried several other types of latch, but kept coming back to the factory ones because they draw the canopy forward as they close. Still didn't like the obtrusive color--but then found the silver-colored versions at Pleasant's Hardware. They work the same way, but look as though they belong with the rest of the airplane. Actually, I almost never use the left one and might omit it if it weren't already there. Useful only in heavy seas or more rain than I like to fly through.

    Anyone in Canada reading this:

These latches are not allowed in Canada. Latches must be openable from the outside as well as inside. I left them off altogether, maybe my canopies are a little less smooth but it hasn't been a problem Then again, I never fly in the rain!

Chris, Canada is smart about latches. But neither of mine get used in flight, and the right one only when I'm going to lock the left canopy from outside.

I don't know about your canopies, Frank, but my factory-supplied ones are Lexan and are almost indestructable. On the other hand, they'd be easy to push or pull off in an emergency. But--please!--let's use the STS site for technical discussions of the SeaRey.
As for copying Canadians, you might be surprised by how reasonable and pleasant that country is and how tolerant the people are of jingoistic Americans.<!-- >'">
' or > missing in user HTML. frank, most of the canadians 'down your way 'are old burnt out snowbirds looking for a quick fix of sunshine.
the rest of us up here rock, even an ex military man like yourself might find it hard to keep up! btw, we need some more encouraging pictures to help speed the building process.some fast taxi water shots would be nice.

We still didn't get the skinny on the WS weatherseal. Also is your masking inside or outside?

Don Maxwell - Feb 23,2005 Viewers | Reply
Tom, as far as I know, the windscreen-to-canopy arrangement is strictly according to the manual. There's the PA-supplied rubber gasket stuck to the WS tube and to the canopy tube, and the two compress slightly when the canopy is fully closed. It's almost water-tight--although I had a distressing leak at the top, where in flight rain got in between the gasket and the windscreen because I just hadn't been careful enough. I bit of clear silicone caulk plugged it.

The 'masking' I think you're referring to is a self-adhesive, metallic-blue vinyl film, that I used for one of the trim colors. It goes on easier (on most surfaces) than paint. I also covered the ABS instrument panel with it. It looks opaque from the outside, but as you can tell here, it's actually somewhat translucent. From this angle (in this photo) it seems to block off a lot of the view through he canopy, but I never notice it while flying.
