Description:
This photo is from the Lazair.com website: http://www.lazair.com/
This one has appears to have the 185 cc Rotax engines, about 9 hp each. (The first engines were 5.5 hp each.) When they first mounted these larger engines, they used two of the original props on each engine, with the blades aligned, 'somewhat like the wings on a biplane.' They claimed that they produced only 1% less thrust that way than at right angles, but had only the drag of a two-blade prop with the engine stopped.
Early Lazairs had three-axis controls, with the stick suspended from the wing and the ruddervators interconnected with the ailerons to eliminate rudder pedals. Later on they introduced a bottom-mounted stick and a rudder pedal option. That's how the one I flew last summer was configured--except that it had a monofloat instead of the two on this one.
If you're curious about Lazairs, the Lazair.com site contains lots of info, including the Type III Assembly Manual and several flight videos.
