I came very close to going 'inverted' two years ago and after reading the experiences of those that have done it, I promised myself to take a 'dunking' course offered here in Canada. Bryan Webster has a fixed base simulator in B.C., but travels across the country with this mobile trainer. There were 14 of us on Saturday taking the course. It started at 10:00 in the classroom, then into the pool for 3 hours of choking and spitting and LEARNING. We finished in the classroom at 17:00 and to a man, all agreed that we had just spent the best $300.00 in our lives.
I am in the process of re-writing my own personal check lists for my ops with VMU.
No more loose objects behind the seats...proper use of seat/shoulder harness....no headset on for landings on the water...and much more. We each had 4 dumps into the water and on my last one,I had arched my back prior to impact and once underwater...inverted, couldn't find the door latch. The safety guys were about to flip me back level when I found the handle...opened the door and got out.
One person had to be rescued because he had twisted his belt buckle and couldn't release the harness. It was one hell of a day!! I hope that the design of our SeaReys makes it easier due to the windshield breaking away.
