One of the fondest memories is flying a Super Widgeon on the BC coast many years ago now. On one charter things did'nt go as planned. I was doing a tug crew change at Fair Harbour about a two hour flight on the west coast of Vancouver Island. I had about an hour to do the change before grounding time. Well the landing was uneventful with just a very light wind coming of the mountains every now and then. Docking against a tug is always a challenge and done very carefully. I was sliding in very nicely with both engines shut of and ready to throw a rope to one of the deck hands on the tug. Just then a slight gust of wind slowed my progress but not to be alarmed I will just reach down and get my paddle and a couple of strokes will get me there. Just as I bent down in the nose to get the paddle I hear a voice ' Its okay pilot I got you' When I looked up he has got a pike pole through the wing about 4 feet from the tip and I can see the aluminum ripped back about 6 inches towards the leading edge. The first thing I said to the Captain is that I am getting a bunk as now there are nine of us on an ocean going tug meant for four. The next morning an engineer came up in a Beaver and made the temporary repair for the ferry flight back to Vancouver.

Ha! This was a case of a gaff causing a gaffe! I suppose you were thankful he didn't have a harpoon cannon, Fred.
