Description: Who can tell about the weather anymore? The forecasters sure can’t. They promised blue skies, white clouds and light winds for a flight to Cedar Key. The Catherders took off to meet Capt. Spratt and Carolyn there for lunch.

For departure there were just broken clouds above. They were easily high enough for low flying SeaReyers. Jon&Jane were in the lead with Gary in trail. As usual Jon descended as we got to the coast. Atypically, however, he had to. The clouds were descending faster than a SeaRey full of water.

At the coast he turned north along the shore, still descending. Ahead was a wall of gray. He was about to turn away when he heard Gary say he had lost sight of lead. That made the decision. We all turned inland.

Not far away to the north, Capt. Spratt had dropped down to 800’ under decreasing ceilings. The way ahead looked suspect to him too. He chose to climb above the clouds and fog.

The situation was rapidly turning critical. We had counted on getting into Cedar Key for lunch. There was no choice but to try to sneak into the DQ at Crystal River. All arrived safely to consider the newly revised forecast.

Capt. Spratt had observed that the cumulus clouds were building. “Naw,” I said, “not in winter. They’ll grow a bit but lack the lift to grow into rain clouds.”

My forecast was no better than Flight Service. The FBO’s radar showed big areas of green and yellow breaking out inland. Rather than try and follow Capt. John north to the Suwannee, we elected to deviate around the cells towards home base.

Checking the satellite weather enroute, I pronounced, “We should be clear after we get around these cells.” It was not to be as depicted. There was one last cell to tango with before parking.
