Description: In the northern arm of the lake is the Valley of Fire state park. Eroded sandstone and old sand dunes more than 150 million years old glow fiery red and white hot under the desert sun. It is a tough looking place from the perspective of a little seaplane.

The sandstone was once part of a deep ocean basin. Over the last 150 million years this area has been stretched by some 150 percent as the continent grew westward. This caused faulting and huge blocks of crust to rise and fall, forming the Basin and Range Geologic Province. Las Vegas is in a down dropped basin and was named for the grasslands that once spread across its landscape.

Valley of fire is a desolate place where Capt. Kirk fell to his death in “Star Trek Generations.” I still can’t believe he died and came back as a lawyer, thereby exemplifying the phrase “…to Hell and not quite back.”

Dan, did you think, just maybe once, about a BRS flying over this hostile terrain?

Dan Nickens - Oct 13,2007 Viewers | Reply
No, Frank, because what you don't see (because I didn't want to show it) is a paved road within easy gliding distance. And, I should add, I didn't see a car the whole time I was puttering around the park.

Great lesson Dan, I should have remembered: The camera doesn't necessarily tell the whole story!

But the photo--as choosen--is still awesome.

In the late 80's and early 90's I had the good fortune to fly my Piper around the West and it is a different
world, the scenery is just spectacular as you have shown us now and from your BIG TRIP! Thanks, even if
you like roads more than BRS'es .

PS: (Even I would opt for the road--I don't have time to build another.)

Frank, I bet it would go much faster the second time

You are right Jeff, there is a learning curve. I measured it on the second wing covering and it was about 1/3rd less time.

Been there many timed Dan... I don't gamble so when I get to Vegas I make a beeline to Valley of fire. Just to the north is AREA 51 THE MOST FAMOUS RESTRICTED AREA IN THE US...

Famous? Or is it infamous? What would the illegal space aliens say?
