Description: According to the map, a petrified forest lay below in a painted desert. You can’t see the forest for the sand from 1000’ up.

You also can’t see the Little Colorado River either, at least not the wet part. The “river” is normally bone dry, but water flows in its sandy bed draining some 20,000 square miles and emptying into the big Colorado River. It is a river proper only during summer thunderstorms when it rises from the sand in a mighty, muddy torrent.
