Description:
An uneasy gloom marked the state of my departure. Delays had already pushed the schedule into other plans. Weather, in the form of low clouds and impending thunderstorms, was closing in, and the forecast for delay was even worse. Complicating matters was an electrical problem with the landing gear. At irregular intervals it would simply pop a fuse. It was an inauspicious beginning to the conclusion of a long journey.
The airplane from Las Vegas was now needed in Mexico. My agreement to ferry it from Orlando to Laredo, Texas seemed more of an obligation than a prospective adventure.
There was some trepidation about the buyers. My only acquaintance with them had been in brief communication by e-mail. They had requested that I demonstrate the airplane upon delivery. That sent off alarm bells in my brain.
I made it clear I was not an instructor. I was only a meagerly paid ferry pilot (“Will fly for food”). It was ultimately agreed that I would merely demonstrate the airplane by landing it in a lake near the airport. The only salve to my conscience was that I explicitly laid out what I considered to be the demanding nature of the airplane and minimum transition training requirements.
After last minute adjustments, the landing gear problem seemed to have been solved. There being no reason to tarry, I launched westward.
