Description: Good luck with fencing the border of a meandering river. The mayors of some Texas border towns have a different idea: deepen and widen the river. They want to dig out the U.S. shore by some 500’, deepen the channel from 2’ to 10’ or more (up to 24’) and use dams and weirs to hold back the water.

I can hear the call now…”This sounds like a job for Mighty Mouse….or even the Corpse of Engineers.”

My ultimate destination, Laredo, was within striking distance. The sun, however, was setting and I was tired. There were hotels without walking distance from the McAllen Airport so I decided to just stop short. There would be plenty of time manana to deliver the airplane by noon.

The daily log was just long enough to fill it completely:
HOU to Galveston Gilchrest International (GLS), 3.3
GLS to Mustang Beach Airport, Port Aransas, TX (RAS), 2.1 hours,
RAS to McAllen, TX, 2.2 hours,
Goodly total of 7.6 hours of air time.

Dan, I'm wondering what flying 7.6 hours in one day in a SR does to the body, physiologically ? I'm thinking
no autopilot, multitasking with the camera, headset crush, vibration, etc.? Care to comment? (Aside from
your principle of... the more time in the air the better... of course.)

I never feel better, Frank, than when I'm out flying about. The normal aches and pains of middle age are overwhelmed by the sensations of awe and inspiration, of freedom and exploration, of release and re-invigoration.

An autopilot? What's the point? I won't share my flying time with anything if I don't have to.

Mult-tasking with the camera? Naw, I'm just taking snap shots because my memory is so poor that I have to have pictures to remind me of what I've seen. It is a quick and automatic task.

Headset crush? Nope. Got one of those in-ear headsets. Before that, I'd just pull off the headset and insert ear plugs.

Vibration? How much do some people pay to get a vibrating chair just to watch some stupid TV program? I don't even notice it in the SeaRey.

I stick by my situational principles, Frank: the more air time the better, unless there is a good beach to park on!

'Middle age???' Sounds good to me, I'm gonna go back and dust that one off for me too.
