The perfect airport, assuming it's large enough.

It is perfect, Dennis, especially for circling approaches and takeoffs!

Isn't this the sewage lagoon from those Magnificent Men & Their Flying Machines?

Gee,<br />That looks like the old site of Camp Blanding. Many WWII vets would probably recognize it, and I think that the Army made it an Army Reserve HQ afterwards. Wouldn't have a wild guess as to its status today.

The old Camp Blanding is still there , and is still an active military training ground. The round lake is Kingsley Lake, and it is a clear water lake. Most of the Lake lies beneath restricted airspace, but I understand that seaplanes have landed in one small area that is outside the area, and then taxied all over the lake. Last time I was there, I camped at the military camping area reserved primarily for families of military personnel. This lake is considerably smaller than the one at Camp Blanding.

I heard the same thing about seaplanes landing there, Rick, and taxiing to a resturant on the east side. Know anything bout that?

No, but I'll check it out. The north and west side of the lake is all commercial/residential , as most of the rest of the lake is military. I drive by there fairly regularly, but haven't been to the lake in years. Nice sandy beach, clear water lake. Not sure how the drought has affected the water level. Post back later.

Strickland's Landing was the place to go for about the last 60 years. Ol' Frow Strickland died in 2002, and the guv'ment wanted their share of his now very expensive real estate. Family had to sell the property, no more picnic area, slides, Searey Parking etc. 'tis a shame! Useless trivia, which may interest you. The lake is situated atop the Trail Ridge of Florida at an elevation of 184'. Contrary to popular belief, it is not spring fed, but is over 100' deep in some areas. Probably was created by a sink hole way before Frank Gracy was born. Still would like to land there.

I notice there is a runway next to the lake. Military only? Non-towered. What does the mil want with that area other than recreation?

Camp Blanding is a very large area for Army and Air guard manuvers and fun. I think that Reserve units from all over the place use it. You see lots of camo trucks convoying to the area, and you hear lots of BOOM BOOM.

This one may look like Kingsley Lake, but it is actually much smaller (the photo shows Silver Lake, south of Frostproof and west of R2901 A& B, covering MacDill AFB Aux).
