I stopped at Farimont WV (4G7) for fuel and lunch at the 50's diner just down the road, splashed in the Ohio River near Wheeling, and arrived at Lost Nation Airport (LNN) east of Cleveland, where I was to visit Bob 'Noot' Newton, my childhood buddy. We hadn't seen each other since high school, and the visit was great fun for me and, I think, for him, too. (Lost Nation, by the way, is where I had my very first airplane ride, at age 8 or 9.)
The next day I had a 2:30 appointment with Canadian customs at Pelee Island (CYPT). Cleveland Approach let me fly past the city two miles offshore as long as I stayed below 2300 feet, so I was able to get a reasonably good look at the Terminal Tower, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Burke Lakefront Airport, the baseball stadium, and all.

This diner is about 100 meters (or maybe it's 100 yards) down the road from the Fairmont airport. It was a four-place Taylorcraft, Dan. It belonged to a friend of my uncle. My uncle and my father let me sit up front, and the pilot let me fly for a while and do a few gentle turns. My recollection is that it was very noisy (no headsets) and a bit boring except for the takeoff and landing--and even they weren't as exciting as I expected because I wasn't tall enough to see over the glareshield. I found the straight-and-level stuff disappointing. (That's one of the reasons why I love flying a SeaRey.) I didn't know it at the time, but Lost Nation was where Cook Cleland had his Corsairs. But I saw him fly one in the Thompson Trophy race at the 1948 Cleveland Air Races, and that was <I>really </I>exciting! Ruined my life.
