Description: After a long day of flying my destination came into view: Lake Winnebago. After Lake Okeechobee in Florida, Lake Winnebago is the second largest natural freshwater lake contained within any single state in the southern 48. It is 30 miles long and 10 miles wide, and averages 15’ deep. It is a remnant of glacial Lake Oshkosh which formed 15,000 years ago when an ice dam prevented water from flowing into Lake Michigan at Green Bay.

Lake Winnebago has a reputation of being treacherous for boats (and flying boats). The shallow lake and western reefs make for some tricky waves when storms clouds billow and the wind howls.
