Description: My master plan had been to fly the coast around to Seattle before turning east to cross the mountains through Stampede Pass. After skirting Whidbey Island, however, it was apparent that low clouds blocked the way east. It was a prickly situation for making progress to the east.

A cautious pilot might have simply found the nearest airport and waited out the clouds. I hate waiting on the ground. I figured I might as well fly where the weather was good. It looked good to the west.

“I know! I’ll just take the Great Circle Route back to Florida!”

I was buoyed by my newly purchased SeaRey Tracking System, or “Spot”. The handy little orange device emitted a signal every ten minutes that was picked up by satellite and plotted on Google Earth. Though I was clearly deviating from my planned flight course, Ann could track me down if I failed to show up for dinner. It is a sure fire plan to avoid making her wait the required statutory period before collecting on my life insurance: a lesson learned from Steve Fossett’s disappearance.
