Description: Just north of Discovery Bay is Protection Island. Unlike the San Juan Islands, it is composed of soft sediments. An aerial geologist without the benefit of ground truth might ascribe its makeup to glacial trash left behind in the glacial outwash of the last ice age. The northern third of Washington State was covered in ice in the last two outbreaks of severe climate cooling.

What’s cool about the island now is that it is a national wildlife refuge (http://www.go-washington.com/Protection-Island-National-Wild
life-Refuge
). It is home to quite a collection of birds, including the tufted puffin. I didn’t see any puffins. In deference to their quiet homes, I maintained a respectful distance.
