Description: Some rocks rage on long after the battle is lost. The sea seems to focus its forces on the weakened and worn rocks, saving the strong for last.

The sea has so many weapons in its arsenal. The most obvious is the direct hydraulic assault. Storm waves relentlessly batter the rocks with their strong hydraulic ram. Not so obvious are the grains and pebbles from its earlier conquests that are picked up by the ramming water and abraded against resistant rocks.

Any opening or crack or weakness in the rock becomes a focus of attack. Above the water, air trapped in cracks and fissures is repeatedly compressed and released by the pounding waves. Blocks of rock are gradually loosen and fall into the surf.

The sea assaults the rocks even on a microscopic level. Spray is thrown up beyond the reach of the waves themselves. Salt crystallizes in tiny crevices and wedges the mineral grains apart. This weakens the rock in preparation for the storm waves that will come to finish their tiny salty work.

Or perhaps this is the crowning moment of the next Everest? Perhaps we should climb it now while the going is easy.<br />I prefer the glass half full.
