Description: Gravity really sucks. It pulls down great mountains. Landslides can happen so suddenly that they can dam the river too. Lewis and Clark found dead trees in the gorge to evidence flooding from just such a landslide.

The landslides are facilitated by the history of the hills. Some of the old volcanic rocks were quite massive and generally impermeable. As they aged, a soil layer formed. Lava flowed over the top of the soil. The new lava easily broke into vertical fractures.

The whole structure dips southward towards the river on the Washington side. Rainwater entering the fractures makes it down to ancient soil before encountering the relatively impermeable underlying rock. Old wet soil is like grease for the overlying rock when gravity comes calling.
