Description: A huge tailwind blasted me through the gorge. At Hood River there was a horde of wind surfers taking advantage of the howling wind.

The Columbia Gorge is world famous for its windy weather. The hot, clear skies east of the Cascades cook the air and it rises. Cooler air from the west rushes in to take its place only to be blocked by the mountains. The gorge offers the wind a funnel, a venturi, that expresses the wind to the east.

The gorge was also a funnel for mega-floods going the other way. When glacial lake Missoula’s ice dam failed, as it did multiple times, its water gushed through the scab lands of Washington and ultimately into the Columbia River.

The wall of water was 2000’ high at the dam. The “Spokane” floodwaters are estimated to have flowed at the rate 40 cubic MILES per day. That is more than the combined flow of all the rivers in the world today, and 80 times the maximum recorded flood of the Mississippi river. The ice dam broke open as many as 35 times, and each time it did the glacier would move back in and dam the river.

Riding the gorge during one of the flood days would have truly been an extreme sport.
