Description:
“The radar shows rain showers to be pretty widespread.”
“Yeah, but they are light and we can go around them.”
“I thought we were going to stick to the road.”
“Mostly.”
“Mostly?”
“Yeah. Mostly. We may need to do some minor deviation.”
“Forget the radar. Look out the windscreen. There is rain right in the pass. Time to turn around or divert to the west.”
“For that little shower? We can easily get around it. There is plenty of clearance between the hills and the clouds.”
“Plenty for a duck, not an airplane.”
“We’ll just deviate a bit to the west and then head up the next valley. We’re within ten miles of the Powder River.”
“I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”
“Chill. You should have faith in Peli and trust him to carry us through.”
“I have great faith in Peli. It’s the pilot I’m worried about.”
“There’s a valley. We’ll give it a try.”
“A valley? It looks like a ditch that ends in a wall.”
“Well, maybe we can just fly on the ridge line.”
“We’re getting pretty close to the cloud base.”
“Yeah, but we can always do a 180 into the valley.”
“Have you looked behind us recently? I think that’s a rain shower.”
“Well, that settles that. It’s not raining ahead.”
That was about the time the wind grabbed Peli and tossed him like a rag towards the trees. There was no choice but to drop into the narrow valley.
“Now what?”
“The only choice is to fly the airplane.”
“If we get into the rain we’ll lose our visibility.”
“We may have to skirt one of these ridges at tree top level.”
“Have you looked at the map? We’re smack dab in the middle of the North Fork Umatilla Wilderness Area. That’s wilderness as in really wild.”
“I don’t have time to look at the map. It’s all I can do to keep the airplane up right and out of the rocks.”
“Let’s look for someplace to put this thing down.”
“Here?”
“Anywhere under control will be better than getting smashed into the rocks.”
“I will not bend this airplane if I can help it.”
“My point exactly. If this gets any worse you won’t be able to ‘help’ it.”
“You’re wrong. Sure it’s a tight spot, but Peli and I can handle it.”
“To misquote a movie line, ‘Son, you’re writing checks your luck can’t cover.’”

Decisions - Conversations - Decisions - Conversations - Gives me goose bumps just reading about it. Would like to hear Peli's version of the story.

Oh, and Peli is male? I though all airplanes were female.

Me, too, Jeff, but Peter alluded that Peli is of the male persuasion. Named by Paula, perhaps?

Dan, I never had the guts to try to read Ulysses but your literary technique has given me the opportunity to enjoy the Joyce-like prose with a SeaRey twist. And the best part, Joyce didn't include pictures. Thanks for the entertainment.
