Description:
The senior monk of Hong-jen's monastery once wrote a poem that went something like this: Our body is the bodhi tree And our mind a mirror bright. Carefully we wipe them hour by hour And let no dust alight.
Huineng, not quite a monk, saw the verse and answered it something like this: There is no bodhi tree Nor stand of a mirror bright. Since all is void, Where can the dust alight?
Dan, not ever a monk, saw these trees, and said: These ain’t no bodhi trees, And I ain’t gonna alight ‘Cause them roots ain’t no void But they’s sure outta sight.
