Description: The pre-dawn hour was hectic with activity. Cars were lined up out into the streets at the few service stations open. Inside the convenience market the line for the women’s restroom was equally long. I imagine their men were around back. The clerks were complaining that they were overwhelmed with the hurricane refugees.

The weather was too scary for me to call a flight briefer. I made sure I got my briefing on the computer so no one would tell me how crazy it was to fly to Florida. Hurricane Gustav was throwing out bands of thunderstorms from Louisiana to the east coast of Florida. It was clear I couldn’t stay where I had parked overnight.

“Since we can’t stay here, let’s head northeast towards Atlanta. That will get us out of the path of the hurricane and weather.”

“It will get us out of the hurricane, but not its path. Once it comes ashore it is sure to track northeast. We could get weathered in for days.”

“Not if we stay ahead it. We can fly to Atlanta today, then southeast to the coast and come in around the backside tomorrow.”

“That’s a long way out of the way and will add at least a day to the flight.”

“So what? It will be the surest way of getting Peli home in one piece.”

“Fine. We’ll have that as Plan B. Plan A is simply to fly as far and as fast as we can, only going due east to the Georgia coast if we have too.”

It was kinda eerie in the dim light of pre-dawn at an empty airport. The tower was not even open for operation as I took off and turned southeast.

The briefing had promised a terrific headwind of 35 knots. That’s serious in a 70 knot airplane. Fortunately the forecast was for 3000’ and I was at 1500’. It was only half as bad down low.
